Do they really need them?
25th February 2025,
Twenty-nineth day of blogging. Helloo guys, I'm pretty pissed off right now. I got a call from my aunty who requested me to teach her 6 years old daughter (my cute little cousin) as she is getting an exam soon. She sent me the contents that she is lacking in through WhatsApp and I called her and asked her to hand over the mobile to my Little cousin. That kiddo's name is kayal vizhi such a graceful Tamil name, isn't it? She is a beautiful, kind, obedient, lovely, talkative, creative kiddo. I started with asking about her day and her school then I moved on to teach her the lessons that my aunt sent me. As I was going through it, i was literally fuming with rage and confusion. The lesson began by stating, "Our world is wonderful, we pray to God to thank him for making the world beautiful. We pray to different Gods and go to different places to worship the God and that's how we are different from each other". The title is Prayers and Worship. I was disappointed with the chapter, it had four parts each explaining four different religions and their holy books and culture. Well structured, neatly presented, brief and simple but the question is, is it really passed to the right audiance or readers? Who are just 6 years old, who doesn't even start their life yet, doesn't even know the simpler concepts and who are not capable of understanding all these divisions and differences. I don't remember having such chapters in my childhood about the religions and their way of worships. I learned them from real life, by socialising with people around me, by rising questions on the way they are dressed, why are they covering their body with long black clothes and why aren't we doing it? Probably my mom might have answered these and would've introduced all these concepts. But I don't have a memory of learning all these technically from a printed paper.
I learned by questioning, what that tall white building with a red-cross is? Perhaps the elders around me taught me about the churches. But when I was placed in a position to teach a child about things which are complex and sensitive, I was stumbling and struggling with the whole chapter as I was too firm that I shouldn't...
1. Teach Differences through religion and their practices.
2. Give an alienated view on people of other religions.
3. Encourage isolating herself from being with people with whom she doesn't share the same religion and practices.
While putting out each of the statement, I was checking that all these three are not delivered or meant. But it was way more difficult than I thought. I asked her, "Do you have any idea of what a religion is?".
She replied with a no. Her innocence made it clear that she has never heard of any terms related to religion as her reply was a big 'no' for all my further questions, You know the term 'Hindu'? Do you know what a church is? Have you ever heard about Quran? Have you been to a mosque?
As I expected I got one yes in between and the question was about a temple. Ofcourse she knows what a temple is as we have went to temples together. But other than that she knows nothing and i couldn't teach her what they are. I gave my best by showing her some pictures of mosque, and church. She asked me, "so we go to temple and they go to church??". I couldn't feel Good afternoon hearing the word 'they' which was echoing on my mind so I said, "yes darling. It's just the way we worship the God." But I was keep on repeating this particular line "but we all are equal and we are humans in common". All I think is she doesn't need such informations and disparities among religions in this young age. First of all she couldn't process what a religion is and even if she could, there is a high chance of alienating, isolating from people as she couldn't relate with them. I'm just worried about the syllabus which is set by the curriculum developers. They should analyse what are more important and basic that are yet to be taught before entering into complex concepts which are meant to be given to students who can grasp them and not to kids.
Meet you in my blog,
Have a nice day✨✨
